From Common Clouds: Data Centers and the Futures of Public Space,

"In human–computer interaction and user interface design, cut, copy, and paste are related commands that offer an interprocess communication technique for transferring data through a computer’s user interface. The cut command removes the selected data from its original position, while the copy command creates a duplicate; in both cases the selected data is kept in temporary storage (the clipboard). The data from the clipboard is later inserted wherever a paste command is issued. The data remains available to any application supporting the feature, thus allowing easy data transfer between applications"

Jesse LeCavalier

Data infrastructure – including data centers, mesh networks, and energy systems – are shaping the way we live together now and in the future. The work displayed here is by students from the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning from design research studios organized by Jesse LeCavalier. Conceived around provocations related to typological speculations and collective futures, the work of these studios explores a range of formal, spatial, and social conditions that might arise through critical engagement of data infrastructure.

The Ring Center is an obsolescing shopping center currently being transitioned to a coworking space. As it is integrated with the commuter rail system and provides everyday uses like supermarkets, it remains and actively used sites and attracts a steady stream of visitors. Hosting a day-long sysmposium in a shopping center was itself a form of research. Participants included architects, artists, scholars, and writers.

Thinking our data through humanities allows to foster a social-contemporary response to the question of how information processing may become an opportunity to shape new architectures and spaces.

The exhibition allows for relocation and reorganization in order to set up the appropiate layout for the Symposium. Guests were able to interact with the racks, making the FKA SIX a live customizable area. The series of movements provide an opportunity to pop the panelboards out of the venue, inviting visitors and publics to participate in the event.
